One way film studios get people excited to see a movie is with a special poster. These movie posters highlight the kind of story a movie is going to tell - for example: action, romance, mystery. A great movie poster helps people decide if this is a movie they want to see. In this activity, you will explore science fiction movie posters and then design your own.

What You Need

  • Paper

  • Pencils, markers, crayons OR digital/computer art program

Why do movie studios create movie posters? What do you think makes a great movie poster? What should a great movie poster do?

Look & Notice

(This is a great activity to do with a fellow Wondernaut in your household!)

Take a look at some movie posters.

  • What do you notice first? Why do you think your notice that first?

  • What is the same? What is different?

  • What colors do you notice?

  • What do you notice about the image(s)?

  • What do you notice about the typography (font)?

  • How has the artist prioritized information?

Now it's your turn! Create your own movie poster. You can design your own ficitional movie for your poster or recreate a poster for a movie of your choice.

Refer back to the "Look & Notice" section where you looked at other posters. Let this help you decide how to design your poster.

Remember, you will need to include the movie title, names of the main actors, and the release date.

Want to complete this task towards collecting a Wondernaut badge? Share with the Wondernaut community by posting a photo of your sci-fi movie poster!

For a bonus challenge, write a quick synopsis of your movie to go along with your poster (a synopsis is a summary or very short version of the story your movie will tell).
